ABBA – Waterloo

“Waterloo” is the first single from the Swedish pop group ABBA’s second album of the same name, and their first under the Epic and Atlantic labels. This was also the first single to be credited to the group performing under the name ABBA. The title and lyrics reference the 1815 Battle of Waterloo, and use it as a metaphor for a romantic relationship. The Swedish version of the single was backed with the Swedish version of “Honey, Honey”, while the English version featured “Watch Out” on the B-side.

“Waterloo” won the Eurovision Song Contest 1974 for Sweden, beginning ABBA’s path to worldwide fame. It topped the charts in several countries, and reached the top 10 in the United States.

Even though this song constantly repeats the name of the battle that spelt the end of Napoleon’s empire, the French, like the rest of Europe, were more than happy to buy this song in large quantities. The single spent 12 weeks on the French charts, peaking at #3. In Belgium, where the Battle of Waterloo took place, this song spent five weeks at #1.

This song also reached #1 in Belgium, Finland, Ireland, Norway, South Africa, Switzerland and West Germany.

At the 50th anniversary celebration of the Eurovision Song Contest in 2005, it was chosen as the best song in the competition’s history.

Înregistrarea originală de la Eurovision din 6 Aprilie, 1974. Aceasta a fost prima audiție internațională a piesei “Waterloo”.

ABBA încercase să ajungă la Eurovision în anul precedent cu piesa “Ring, Ring” dar au pierdut intrarea. Piesa care a reprezentat Suedia a ajuns pe locul 5.

Anul următor în 1974, au fost în sfârșit selectați să reprezinte Suedia. Ințial, casele de pariuri i-au considerat câștigători, dar șansele lor au scăzut considerabil, favoriți fiind să câștige în seara de 6 Aprilie, Anglia sau Olanda. Dar nimeni nu a văzut dinainte, cum ei interpretau această melodie.

Melodia pe care ei plănuiau înițial să o cânte, era o balada, ‘Hasta Mañana’, care mai mult ca sigur nu ar fi avut nici un success.  Așa că au decis să cânte Waterloo. Versurile melodiei, au fost traduse în engleză – pentru a câștiga audiența internațională, iar prezentarea melodiei pe scenă a fost impecabilă.

Nu numai că au înregistrat melodia în suedeză, dar ABBA au făcut o versiune în franceză și una în germană.
