Rod Stewart – Da Ya Think I’m Sexy

As the lead single from Blondes Have More Fun, Da Ya Think I’m Sexy? was released on November 10, 1978, a week before the album released on Riva/Warner Bros. in the United States and United Kingdom.

The song was a radio and dance club success, climbing the charts and hitting the top of the UK charts in December 1978 and the Billboard Hot 100 number one in February 1979 for four weeks.

Critics were not as kind to Stewart as fans, feeling he was influenced by the disco craze, but the song has become one of the fan favourites and a club hit that still continues to be used in dance playlists well into the 21st century.

Stewart used “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy?” as the name of his 1978 tour. He would wear tight spandex and gyrate on stage. When he sang the title line, hoards of women would scream back, “Yes!”

This went along with the Hollywood lifestyle Stewart had adopted. He moved from England to Los Angeles in 1975 and quickly fit in with the glamorous crowd. Dating blonde models was his specialty.
This was promoted by an unusual “video-within-a-video” showing people watching Stewart perform the song on a “television screen.” The concert footage was taped first – whenever Stewart forgot the lyrics, he’d turn his face away from the camera.

The female lead in the video is the Norwegian model Lillian Muller, who was Playboy’s Playmate of the Year in 1976.
