This was written by Joe South and first recorded by the country singer Billy Joe Royal in 1967. Joe South was a prominent session musician and songwriter; some of his other compositions include “Games People Play” and “Rose Garden.”

After Royal released his version, “Hush” was quickly recorded by many artists in a variety of styles. The song is about a guy who is so crazy in love that he’ll drop everything if he thinks she might be calling his name. Royal’s recording has a definite country feel, while Deep Purple used a heavy rock sound.

“Hush” is one of four songs originally recorded with the band’s original vocalist Rod Evans and bassist Nick Simper that Deep Purple have performed with their replacements Ian Gillan and Roger Glover later on. Others are “Mandrake Root”, also from Shades of Deep Purple, “Kentucky Woman”, from the album The Book of Taliesyn from 1968 and “Bird Has Flown”, from the album Deep Purple from 1969. The instrumental “Wring That Neck” from The Book of Taliesyn was also a regular part of the band’s setlist into the early 1970s.

Versiunea Deep Purple a fost inclusă pe primul lor album Shades of Deep Purple și a fost înregistrată în componentă originală, care nu-l include și pe Ian Gillan, care a venit în 1969, în locul lui Rod Evans. Deși este o piesă care le-a plăcut întotdeuna fanilor, Ian Gillan nu a inclus-o în concerte, deoarece nu el a fost vocalistul original.
