Martina McBride – Girls Like Me

“Girls Like Me” serves as an ode to the “girls”, i.e. women, who are “like” Martina McBride. That is to say that she is celebrating those who have gone through similar experiences like her but have still managed to press on. And we can say that the narrative is split into two main sections.

First, the singer recounts the days when she was young and more susceptible to falling in love. Possessing such a disposition has led to her having her heart broken. And at one point she was sad that the guy she once loved so much didn’t seem to miss her. Or stated otherwise, she was dealing with “insecurities”. But now she has come to realize that said experiences have made her more resolved.

In the second part of the song, she is now speaking more of her adult life. As the years have transpired, she acknowledges that her “dreams” and “priorities” have changed. Basically at one point she was convinced she knew what she wanted, but now she realizes she “had it all wrong”. However, she doesn’t conclude with a sentiment of regret for her past actions. Rather, as stated earlier, she has come realize that those “mistakes” ultimately led to her becoming a “better” person. And outside of herself, she is also telling her female ilk the same, that life evolves. Moreover whereas a lady may have to deal with certain issues for a moment in time, such is more or less to be expected as part of the overall growth process.
