The names in the song came from an incident at a party that Simon went to with his then-wife Peggy Harper. French composer and conductor Pierre Boulez, who was attending the same party, mistakenly referred to Paul as “Al” and to Peggy as “Betty”, inspiring Simon to write a song.
Simon did not like the original music video for the song, which was a performance of the song Simon gave during the monologue when he hosted Saturday Night Live in the perspective of a video monitor. A replacement video directed by Gary Weis was conceived partly by Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels, in which Saturday Night Live alumnus Chevy Chase lip-synced Simon’s vocals as Simon lip-synced to the backing vocals and brought in various instruments to mime playing when they respectively appear in the song. The height difference between the 6 ft 4 in (193 cm) Chase and the 5 ft 3 in (160 cm) Simon serves as a comical juxtaposition.
This was the first single off Graceland, which won a Grammy for Album of the Year in 1988. It was Simon’s first hit since 1980, when “Late In The Evening” went to #6 in the US.

Paul Simon a început compoziția la această melodie pe când se afle în Africa de Sud, a făcut mai multe înregistrări ajutat de muzicieni locali din grupul Stimela. A dus beanzile la New York unde producătorul Roy Halee a edit melodia. Mai mult elemnte din muzica locală au fost incluse în piesă.
Melodia este despre un individ preocupat de sine, care începe să realizezse și ce se află în jurul sau.
De unde provin “Al” și “Betty” în această melodie? În 1970, Paul și soția lui Peggy Harper au avut un party, la care prietenul lui, compozitorul Stanley Silverman, a invitat un alt compozitor, Pierre Boulez, care la plecare i-a spus lui Simon “Al” și soției lui “Betty”. Pierre Boulez, era francez, și nu a fost nepoliticos – a fost interpretarea lui la ceea ce a auzit Paul =Al și Peggy = Betty.
În video apare Chevy Chase care cântă lip-sync, în timp ce Paul Simon pretinde că ar cânta la mai multe instrumente. Cele mai multe video în acei ani erau “performace video”, adică grupurile pretindeau doar că ar cânta. Acest video face haz de acele “performanțe”. De asemenea videoclipul se distinge prin simplitate – este filmat într-o camera mică, fără nici un ornament, folosind doar o singură camera de filmat.
