“Knock Three Times” – Single by Tony Orlando and Dawn from the album Candida, released in November 1970.

“Knock Three Times” is a popular song credited simply to “Dawn”.  The song was released as a single, which hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in January 1971 and eventually sold six million copies. The song registered well at Adult Contemporary stations, reaching No. 2 on ‘Billboard’s “Easy Listening” survey. Outside the US, “Knock Three Times” also claimed the No. 1 spot on the UK Singles Chart

This song is about a guy who falls in lust with his downstairs neighbor. She doesn’t know him, but he obsesses over her and leaves her a note one day with an elaborate plan to pursue a relationship: she is instructed to knock three times on the ceiling if she wants him, and to bang twice on the pipe if not. We don’t find out how she responds, but he would probably have better luck if he just talked to her.

Backup singers on the Candida album included Toni Wine (who co-wrote the song “Candida”), Jay Siegel (from The Tokens), Robin Grean and Linda November. These were all behind-the-scenes writers and performers; Orlando needed a new group to back him up live and on future recordings. That job went to Telma Hopkins and Joyce Vincent, who became “Dawn” (the name had a nature connotation; at least three guys involved with the project claimed that it was named after their daughters). The combination worked very well, in part because Hopkins and Vincent were great on camera, as was Orlando. The trio had another #1 hit in 1973 with “Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Ole Oak Tree,” and the following year got their own variety show, which ran through 1977. Hopkins landed roles on the TV series Bosom Buddies, Gimme A Break and Family Matters.

“Knock Three Times” este un single lansat în Noiembrie 1970, de pe albumul Candina. Melodia este de dinainte de “Dawn”,  cei care o cânta în original sunt Tony Orlando, Toni Wine și Linda November.  La înregistrarea acestei piese nu exista “Dawn”. Grupul “Dawn” va fi format ulterior  cu Thelma Hopkins și Joyce Vincent Wilson, care apar în acest videoclip.

Doi producători, Hank Medress și Dave Appell, înregistrau un cântec, “Candida” cu un artist pe nume Frankie Paris pentru Bell Records. Șeful de la Bell, Larry Utell nu era deloc încântat de vocea lui Paris, așa că producătorii au convins un vechi prieten, Tony Orlando (pe atunci lucra la CBS Records în secția de publicații) să cânte.

Tony Orlando, care a avut câteva hituri, pe când avea 16 ani, să lăsat de cântat intre timp, și fără prea mare tragere de inima a înregistrat melodia. La lansarea din 1970, Tony nu a vrut că numele lui să pară pe copertă, pentru a nu intra în confict cu CBS. Așa că single-lul a fost lansat sub numele Dawn. Tony Orlando, nu a dat importantă piesei, care a ajuns pe locul #3 în top, devenind hit. Asta l-a convins să-și reia cariera muzicală.
