Pearl Jam’s “Jeremy” video wins four awards, including Video of the Year, at the MTV Video Music Awards. Pearl Jam responds by not making any more videos until 1998.
In addition to Video of the Year, “Jeremy” wins for Best Group Video, Best Metal/Hard Rock Video, and Best Director (Mark Pellington). Eddie Vedder is nonplussed in his acceptance speeches. “I don’t know how you can say it’s the best,” he says. “It’s just a little piece of art, and you can’t put art into a competition.”

Teddy Pendergrass plays a midnight “For Women Only” concert at Avery Fisher Hall in New York to promote his album Life Is A Song Worth Singing. It’s ladies only in the crowd, and they are treated to white chocolate and lollipops. It proves very popular and more women-only shows are held to capitalize on Pendergrass’ appeal to the opposite sex.

The Erie Canal Soda Pop Festival was held over three days on Bull Island, near Griffin, Indiana. The Promoters expected over 50,000 music fans, and over 200,000 attended the festival. Many bands pulled out as the festival drifted steadily into anarchy. Bands that did appear included Flash Cadillac & the Continental Kids, Black Oak Arkansas, Cheech and Chong, Foghat, Albert King, Brownsville Station, Canned heat, Flash, Ravi Shankar, Rory Gallagher, Lee Michaels and Frosty, the Eagles, The Amboy Dukes, and Gentle Giant. Three concert goers drowned in the Wabash River and as the festival ended, the remnants of the crowd burned down the music stand.

The “Soda” Pop Festival lost an estimated $200,000, according to co-promoter Bob Alexander. The promoters were subsequently sued by the landowner of Bull Island, onsite vendors, the Internal Revenue Service, the state governments of Illinois and Indiana, and a local farmer who alleged “cattle lost due to marijuana inhalation”; legal proceedings continued for nine years after the festival.
