“Lady in Black” is the fourth track of their 1971 album Salisbury.

The song is credited to Ken Hensley. It tells the story of a man wandering through war-torn darkness and encountering a goddess-like entity who consoles him. It is often praised, by fans and critics alike, as Hensley’s most poetic work. There were many b-sides for this song as a single. The most famous was “Simon the Bullet Freak” but “Bird of Prey” has also been the b-side for the song. In 1981 the song was re-released as a single in Germany and in Netherlands and the b-side was “Easy Livin'”

In Cheltenham, England, about 20 people saw a mysterious “Lady In Black” in the years 1882 to 1889. In Texas a story is told that the lady in black was the wife of a rich man from Spain that was hung one day. Since that day, her ghost visits the area near Highway 281 in Alice, Texas. Many drivers reported that they have seen a mysterious woman, a lady in black.

David Byron usually sang Heep’s songs, but Hensley sang this one. Hensley has stated that this was because Byron didn’t like “Lady in Black” to such a degree that he refused to perform on it. After producer Gerry Bron suggested Hensley sing it himself, he did so. The song ended up being one of Heep’s best and most loved.

Lady In Black, este o melodie de pe albumul Salisbury din 1971.

În Cheltenham, Anglia, în între anii 1882 și 1889 vreo 20 de oameni au văzut o femeie misterioasă îmbrăcată în negru – “Lady În Black”. În Texas este o poveste despre o lady îmbrăcată în negru, soția unui individ bogat din Spania, care a fost spânzurată. Din aceea zi, stafia ei apare lângă Highway 281 în Alice, Texas. Mulți șoferi au raportat că au văzut o femeie misterioasă, îmbrăcată în negru.

Ken Hensley a spus, că într-adevăr este vorba despre o tânăra îmbrăcată în negru cu părul fluturându-i în vântul de iarnă. El spus că “ea nu venea spre mine, doar că a trecut pe stradă prin dreptul hotelului unde noi stăteam în timpul unui turneu prin nord-vestul Angliei”.
