“Sailing” – Single by Christopher Cross from the album Christopher Cross. B-side: “Say You’ll Be Mine (Germany)
Released June 15, 1980
Recorded 1979
It was released in June 1980 as the second single from his debut album Christopher Cross (1979), which was already certified Gold by this time. The song was a success in the United States, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on August 30, 1980, where it stayed for one week.
Cross wrote this song about his memories sailing every summer with a friend in Texas. It became the paragon of “Yacht Rock,” a term used to define a form of easy listening music favored by the rich. And what defines yacht music better than a song about sailing?
Christopher Cross won three Grammy Awards for this song: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist. The following year he won an Oscar for Best Song with his “Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do)” from the Dudley Moore movie Arthur.
‘Sailing” este un single de pe albumul Christopher Cross din 1980.
Christopher a compus acest cântec cu gândul la verile petrecute cu un prieten în Texas, navigând. A fost perioada în care navigația și apă l-a incatat, tinandul departe de problemele zilnice, adolescent fiind.
Christopher Cross a luat 3 Grammys cu această melodie: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, și Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist.
“Sailing” a fost cel de-al doilea single al lui, pe care el l-a considerat a fi cel mai bun pe care l-a compus, dar nu s-a așteptat să fie un hit.
Lyrics
Well, it’s not far down to paradise, at least it’s not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away and find tranquility
Oh, the canvas can do miracles, just you wait and see.
Believe me.
It’s not far to never-never land, no reason to pretend
And if the wind is right you can find the joy of innocence again
Oh, the canvas can do miracles, just you wait and see.
Believe me.
Sailing takes me away to where I’ve always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free
