Hey Joe – 16 December 1966

The first Jimi Hendrix single is released, “Hey Joe”, on December 16, 1966. The song is about a guy shoots his “old lady” after catching her cheating.

At that time, Hendrix is fronting the band Jimmy James and the Blue Flames in 1966 when he leaves for the fertile musical fields of England at the urging of his manager, Chas Chandler of The Animals. Chandler sets him up with a new band: The Jimi Hendrix Experience, a power trio of Hendrix, drummer Mitch Mitchell, and bass player Noel Redding. They record “Hey Joe” and a Hendrix original called “Stone Free,” and peddle it to Decca Records, where it is rejected by the same guy who turned down The Beatles. Polydor takes it in a one-single deal and issues the song in the UK, where it lands at #6 in February 1967. Reprise Records issues it in America a few months later, but it goes unnoticed.

A scorching blues number, “Hey Joe” was written by a singer named Billy Roberts, who played it in and around New York City in the early ’60s. In 1966, The Byrds, The Leaves, and Love released uptempo renditions, and a folk singer named Tim Rose did a slower version, which is what Hendrix used as a template, adding a more appropriate backing to the murder ballad.

The Hendrix cover becomes the standard, but many other artists record it as well, covering an array of styles. Among the most popular by genre:

Hey Joe, primul single a lui Jimi Hendrix, a fost lansat pe 16 Decembrie 1966. În acel an Jimi părăsea grupul cu care cânta atunci, Jimmy James and Blue Flames, la insistențele lui Chas Chandler (The Animals) și s-a dus în Anglia.  Acolo a format Jimi Hendrix Experience, un trio cu bateristul Mitch Mitchell și basistul Noel Redding.

Împreună au înregistrat Hey Joe și o piesă originală a lui Hendrix: Stone Free. Au prezentat aceste două melodii la Decca Records, dar au fost respinși, de același individ care i-a respins și pe Beatles. Așa că au semnat un contract pentru un singur single cu Polydor, și au lansat single-ul în Marea Britanie unde a ajuns pe locul 6 în top-uri,  la 6 Februarie 1967. Reprise Records a lansat single-ul în Statele Unite, unde a trecut neobservat.

Hey Joe a fost scris de un muzician cu numele Billy Roberts, pe care el îl cânta în aria New York-ului la începutul anilor ’60. Melodia a mai fost preluată și de Byrds, Leaves and Love care au cântat într-un tempo mai rapid, precum și de cantărețul de folk Tim Rose, cântând într-un tempo mai slow. Această este versiunea din care s-a inspirat Jimi Hendrix.

Versiunea lui Jimi Hendrix a devenit standardul pentru Hey Joe.
