“You Belong To Me” is the second single that took first position in the UK official charts on January 16 1953. Stayed only one week at #1. The song was number two on the first UK chart, but it took 10 weeks for her to dislodge “Here In My Heart” (the first number one in chart). This was written in 1952 by Chilton Price, Redd Stewart and Pee Wee King.

The original version of the song was recorded by Sue Thompson on Mercury’s country label. It was soon covered by Patti Page, whose version was issued by Mercury, with “I Went to Your Wedding” (a bigger Patti Page hit, reaching #1) on the flip side. It entered the Billboard chart on August 22, 1952, and lasted 12 weeks on the chart, peaking at #4.

A cover version by Jo Stafford became the most popular version. Issued by Columbia Records, it was Stafford’s greatest hit, topping the charts in both the United States and the United Kingdom (the first song by a female singer to top the UK chart). It first entered the US chart on August 1, 1952 and remained there for 24 weeks.

Although “You Belong To Me” was initially a country song from the writers of “Tennessee Waltz”, it crossed over to pop and Jo Stafford’s version topped the US charts for five weeks.

Jo Elizabeth Stafford was born on November 12, 1917, in Coalinga, California. Jo Stafford began her professional career singing with her sisters, Christine and Pauline, in a group known as The Stafford Sisters. They performed on radio shows such as David Brockman’s California Melodies and the Crockett Family of Kentucky Show. After her sisters married, the group disbanded, and members of the Three Rhythm Kings and The Four Esquires joined Jo to form the Pied Pipers vocal group.
Jo Stafford was one of the first artists to record parody versions of hit songs, and was known for her work with the USO where she entertained the troops. She died on July 16, 2008 at age 90.

See the pyramids along the Nile /Watch the sun rise on a tropic isle /Just remember, darling, all the while /You belong to me.

See the marketplace in old Algiers /Send me photographs and souvenirs /Just remember when a dream appears/ You belong to me.

I’ll be so alone without you/ Maybe you’ll be lonesome too, and blue/ Fly the ocean in a silver plane/ See the jungle when it’s wet with rain/ Just remember till you’re home again/ You belong to me.
