“Spanish Harlem” – Single by Aretha Franklin from the album Aretha’s Greatest Hits. B-side “Lean on Me”. Released July 9, 1971.
Recorded at February 16, 1971, “Spanish Harlem” was originally scheduled to be included on her Young Gifted and Black album, but instead was later added to her Aretha’s Greatest Hits LP.
The acoustic guitar line was performed by Don Arnone. Arranger/co-producer Arif Mardin overdubbed Hubert Laws’ flute and members of the New York Philharmonic in New York.
Co-produced by Jerry Wexler, Mardin, and engineer Tom Dowd, “Spanish Harlem” went gold, settled at number one R&B for three weeks and number two pop for two weeks in the summer of 1971.
Aretha Franklin’s version earned a gold single for sales of over one million. Dr. John played keyboards on Franklin’s version with Bernard “Pretty” Purdie on drums and Chuck Rainey on bass.
