“Blanket on the Ground” is a song written by Roger Bowling, and recorded by American country music singer Billie Jo Spears. It was released in February 1975 as the second single and title track from the album Blanket on the Ground. Irish born singer Philomena Begley covered the song as the lead single from her 1975 LP of the same name. The single was released on August 4, 1975 in Ireland and August 6, 1975 in the United Kingdom reaching number 1 and number 4 in the UK and Ireland respectively.

Many artists have a “career record”, a song which becomes so well-known that it swamps anything else they do. With Billie Jo Spears, it was her 1975 single, “Blanket on the Ground”, a song which suggested putting the romance back into a marriage. “It became controversial,” said Spears, “as many of the listeners thought I was singing ‘sleep around’ instead of ‘slip around’. The country fans thought it sounded like a cheating song, and they don’t like girls who sing cheating songs. “ With a few more plays, everyone realized what the song was about and it became an international bestseller.

Billie Jo Spears era în pregătiri să înregistreze un nou album în 1975. Cu o zi înaintea primei sesiuni, producătorul Larry Butler mai caută câteva piese. Roger Bowling era în biroul lui și deja prezentase cateve piese, când managerul lui , Paul Ritchey, a sugerat să cânte “Blanket On The Ground.”Melodia era cunoscută în Nashville, de vreo 2-3 ani, dar producătorii au ocolit-o pentru că în refren, este vorba de un cuplu căsătorit, și sânt două cuvinte, “slippin’ around” – care erau înțelese greșit.
