The single had its premiere on 2nd November 1978 on the German TV-show “Starparade” (Episode 44) which aired on ZDF. It was the second single for the group in the UK’s all-time best selling singles list. The song was later included in the group’s Christmas Album, issued in 1981.

In the United States, the track reached number 85 on the Billboard Hot 100, Boney M’s last of four singles to chart there.

Two music videos were produced to promote the single. One featured the band in a white room wearing white furry coats, while the second, made to promote the 1988 remix featured the band once again dressed in white with a nativity scene.

It was only at the last minute that Boney M decided to record and release this song. Lead singer Liz Mitchell said the process was hard work, as it involved “singing a track in the studio more than 50 times in one session, including lead, backing vocals, harmonies and all the oohs and aahs.”

Boney M were created by German record producer Frank Farian in the mid-1970s and saw Mitchell star alongside fellow lead vocalist Marcia Barrett and singers Maizie Williams and Bobby Farrell.

Boney M. - Mary's Boy Child

Mary’s boy child Jesus Christ, was born on Christmas Day.
And man will live for evermore, because of Christmas Day.

Long time ago in Bethlehem, so the Holy Bible say,
Mary’s boy child Jesus Christ, was born on Christmas Day.

Hark, now hear the angels sing, a king was born today,
And man will live for evermore, because of Christmas Day.
Mary’s boy child Jesus Christ, was born on Christmas Day.

While shepherds watch their flock by night,
They see a bright new shining star,
They hear a choir sing a song, the music seem to come from afar.

Hark, now hear the angels sing, a king was born today,
And man will live for evermore, because of Christmas Day.

For a moment the world was aglow, all the bells rang out
There were tears of joy and laughter, people shouted
“Let everyone know, there is hope for all to find peace.”

Now Joseph and his wife, Mary, came to Bethlehem that night,
They found no place to bear her child, not a single room was in sight.

And then they found a little nook, in a stable all forlorn,
And in a manger cold ‘n’ dark, Mary’s little boy was born.

Hark, now hear the angels sing, a king was born today,
And man will live for evermore, because of Christmas Day.
Mary’s boy child Jesus Christ, was born on Christmas Day.

Oh a moment still worth was a glow, all the bells rang out
There were tears of joy and laughter, people shouted
“let everyone know, there is hope for all to find peace”.
