“True Colors” – Single by Cyndi Lauper from the album True Colors, with the B-side “Heading for the Moon”.

This was written by the songwriting team of Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly, who also wrote Madonna’s “Like A Virgin,” Heart’s “Alone,” and Lauper’s “I Drove All Night.” The song is about looking below the surface to see what a person is really like.

This was the only original song on the album that Lauper didn’t help write.

The accompanying music video for the song, which received heavy rotation on MTV, was directed by American choreographer Patricia Birch. In the video, Lauper sings on a dark soundstage, sitting beside a drum and holding a black flower. A young girl who explores a beach takes the flower and ends up seeing two women, one light-skinned and one dark-skinned, drinking tea on a boat. Lauper appears on the beach in an elaborate jeweled headdress with a shell in her hand. She is then seen lying on a white sheet, which a long haired man (David Wolff) proceeds to pull. They eventually share a kiss. Lauper is then seen walking on the beach with a skirt made of newspaper while she walks past a class of schoolchildren. At the end of the video, she leans over a pool of water, in a scene reminiscent of the album photo cover. The video ends as it began, only now, Lauper is beating on the drum four times, in time with the music.

True Colors – melodie de pe albumul cu același titlu, din 1986 al lui Cyndi Lauper. Este o compoziție Billy Steinberg și Tom Kelly. Este singura melodie originală de pe album la care Cyndi Lauper nu a participat la compoziție.

Melodia a fost preluată de alți muzicieni, Phil Collins a lansat o versiune în 1998, care a avut succes în top-uri. În Australia, Kasey Chambers a înregistrat melodia care a fost folosită  pentru tema cupei mondiale de rugby, în 2003. Justin Timberlake și actrița Anna Kendrick au realizat un cover în 2016 pentru filmul Troll.
