Huey Lewis & The News – The Power Of Love

“The Power of Love” is a 1985 single by Huey Lewis and the News, written for the soundtrack of the 1985 blockbuster film Back to the Future. The song became the band’s first number-one hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and their second number-one hit on the U.S. Mainstream Rock chart. In the United Kingdom, it was released as a double-A side with “Do You Believe in Love”, becoming the band’s only top ten hit on the UK Singles Chart. The song is included alongside “Back in Time” on the film’s soundtrack, and appears as a bonus track on international editions of the band’s fourth studio album, Fore!.

This was featured in the movie Back to the Future and included on the soundtrack. It plays in a scene where Marty McFly (played by Michael J. Fox) hears it as he rides his skateboard from Doc’s house to school.

The film’s director Robert Zemeckis wanted Lewis to do the song – Huey Lewis & the News were rising stars with a modern sound that worked well in the movie, which takes place in both 1955 and 1985. Lewis had never done film work and hesitated at first, since he didn’t want to write a song called “Back to the Future.” When Zemeckis told him that the song didn’t have to be about the movie, Lewis accepted the challenge.

The song has a very universal message that works very well outside of the film. Lewis was newly married and had two young children when he wrote it with his bandmates Johnny Colla and Chris Hayes. His family provided inspiration for the lyrics.

A fost pentru prima dată când Huey Lewis and the News au avut o melodie într-un film.  Melodia a fost compusă în timpul filmărilor și a fost adăugată post producție, în secvența unde Marty este pe skateboard în drum spre școală. Secvența nu are nimic cu “power of love”, dar muzica se potrivește scenei.

O secvență din film, înainte de melodie, în care Marty MvFly și trupa lui The Pinheads, sunt în audiție pentru seara de dans a școlii, apare și Huey Lewis (ne-creditat), unde are rolul unui profesor în juriul pentru audiție. Trupa începe să cânte “The Power of Love,”dar mai înainte ca Marty să cânte vreo notă, Lewis, îi oprește, spunând “Mă tem că sânteti mult prea gălăgioși” (“I’m afraid you’re just too darn loud.”)

Video nu are scene din film, dar Christopher Lloyd în rolul lui Doc Brown, vine la clubul unde Huey Lewis and the News cântau, cu DeLorean. Lewis pe scenă explică cum au ajuns ei la Hollywood, în timp ce afară, câțiva tineri, pornesc într-o călătorie în timp.
