Johnny Mathis - Unforgettable“Unforgettable” is the Johnny Mathis tribute to Nat King Cole. Two live versions of this song, here, by Johnny Mathis. This has been released in 1983 in UK on the album Unforgettable – A Musical Tribute to Nat King Cole, by the CBS Records division of Columbia in conjunction with the broadcast of Johnny Mathis’s BBC television concert special of the same name that featured Cole’s daughter Natalie.

“Unforgettable” is a popular song written by Irving Gordon. The song’s original working title was “Undeniable”; however, the music publishing company asked Gordon to change it to “Unforgettable”. The song was published in 1951. Nat King Cole recorded in 1951 from his album “Unforgettable” (1952), with an arrangement written by Nelson Riddle.

John Royce Mathis (born September 30, 1935) is an American singer of popular music. Starting his career with singles of standard music, he became highly popular as an album artist, with several dozen of his albums achieving gold or platinum status and 73 making the Billboard charts. According to Guinness Music writer and charts historian Paul Gambaccini, Mathis has sold over 400 million records worldwide to date, making him the third-biggest selling artist of the 20th century after Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra. Mathis has received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame for three recordings.

  • One of the most financially ingenious artists in the recording industry, Mathis has full responsibility and creative control of the production of his recordings through Jon Mat Records, Inc. where he chooses his own songs, producers, etc. while Columbia Records remains responsible for distribution.
  • Just two years after his first recordings, his record album “Johnny’s Greatest Hits” (1958) (Columbia Records) started the “Greatest Hits” trend for recording artists and record companies; every record company thereafter began to release “Greatest Hits” albums for their recording artists.
  • In 1982, the Johnny Mathis Invitational Track & Field Tournament at San Francisco State University is named in his honor.
  • As of 2004, he has had the longest stay of any popular artist with Columbia Records to date, having recorded for them almost exclusively since 1956.
  • He was awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Recording at 1501 Vine Street in Hollywood, California on June 1, 1972.
  • Has the distinction of having an album – “Johnny Mathis’ Greatest Hits” – on the Billboard charts for longer than any other album in history: 490 weeks, or the equivalent of 9-1/2 years.
