“Communication Breakdown” Single by Led Zeppelin from the album Led Zeppelin. Released: March 10th 1969.

The song is 2 minutes and 26 seconds long. It was one of the first worked on by the band, shortly after formation and before they had played any gigs. It developed from a guitar riff played by Jimmy Page, while the rest of the band wrote the song around it.

Bassist John Paul Jones later said “This is Page’s riff – you can tell instantly”. Singer Robert Plant could not receive a songwriting credit owing to a previous record contract, and consequently it was credited simply to the other three band members.

The guitar riff was inspired by Eddie Cochran’s “Nervous Breakdown.” Jimmy Page used a small, miked amplifier to create the “guitar in a shoebox” sound.

Running 2:30 in its studio version, this is one of the more compact Led Zeppelin songs. When they played live, the band would often stretch out the instrumental sections of songs (notably “Dazed And Confused”), but “Communication Breakdown” stayed tight, typically taking up a mere three minutes in the set.

This was one of the few times Page sang a backing vocal for Led Zeppelin.

In the US, this was released as a single but it did not chart.
