Mud were at it for a few years before they hit the big time. They formed in 1966 and originally got going with psychedelic pop, but they could never quite get any success, but kept trying for years. Eventually, they signed for RAK records under the watchful eye of Suzi Quatro producer Mickie Most. After a few hits in 1973, they finally hit number one twice in 1974, originally with this. This was a huge success and while Lonely This Christmas, probably has more legs due to the seasonal playlists, it was the highest selling single of 1974 in Britain. Mud’s lead guitarist was Rob Davis, who would pop up in the charts over twenty years later, having partly written Kylie’s Can’t Get You out of My Head and Fragma’s Toca’s Miracle.

It’s all about that catchy chorus, which is very easy to sing along to, that’s right that’s right that’s right… In terms of comparing to its predecessors, it has a very Sweet feel, containing an echo of the band’s upbeat, rocking sound bursting with energy. Problem is, this kinda lacks Sweet’s power a bit. It’s just not as manic and storming, but I don’t want to labour that too much, as it’s still a good song. Les Gray’s vocals are a bit throwaway in the verses, but that chorus as mentioned is fantastic. Otherwise, the most notable point is probably Rob Davis’ guitar, which gets a few upbeat moments off. A real toe-tapper that no doubt lit up a few dances.
