“It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)” a fost lansată pe single la 16 Noiembrie 1987, melodie de pe albumul Document. La Billboard a ajuns până pe locul 69 și în UK Singles Chart pe locul 39. Deși nu a avut un succes de top, a rămas una din cele mai cunoscute melodii ale grupului.

Grupul s-a format în 1980, după ce au luat în considerare nume ca Cans of Piss, Negro Eyes, și Twisted Kites, dar în final au decis pentru R.E.M. care sânt inițialele de la Rapid Eye Movement – stagiul de vis în somn.

Melodia a revenit n actualitate în situația curentă din lume.
