Radio Flora TM More music, more variety
Sherry is a single from album Jersey Boys, released in 1962 by the Four Seasons (with Frankie Valli). “Sherry” was released as a single in August 1962 and made it all the way to the top of the pop charts just four weeks later.
“Sherry” was the band’s first nationally released single and their first number one hit, reaching the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 on September 15, 1962. It remained at number one for five consecutive weeks, and number one on the R&B charts for one week. “Sherry” became the first single by The Four Seasons to go to number one on the R&B charts.
In the next six months, the Four Seasons would earn two more #1 hits with “Big Girls Don’t Cry” and “Walk Like A Man,” making them the only American group ever to earn three consecutive #1 hits.
“Sherry” has become such an overplayed staple of oldies radio that it can be hard to realize that it was indeed innovative and novel at the time. Of course, it was also overplayed at the time, reaching #1 in 1962, giving the Four Seasons their first hit. “Sherry” is steeped in doo wop music, in both the falsetto lead vocals and the rhythmically clever, lower backup harmonies.
