“Jumpin’ Jack Flash” – Single by the Rolling Stones
Released: May 24, 1968 (UK) and June 1, 1968 (US)
Recorded: April 20, 1968
Studio Olympic, London
Songwriters: Mick Jagger, Keith Richards

Who is “Jack Flash”? His name is Jack Dyer, and he was Keith Richards’ gardener. Richards explained to Rolling Stone in 2010: “The lyrics came from a gray dawn at Redlands. Mick and I had been up all night, it was raining outside, and there was the sound of these boots near the window, belonging to my gardener, Jack Dyer. It woke Mick up. He said, ‘What’s that?’ I said, ‘Oh, that’s Jack. That’s jumping Jack.’ I started to work around the phrase on the guitar, which was in open tuning, singing the phrase ‘Jumping Jack.’ Mick said, ‘Flash,’ and suddenly we had this phrase with a great rhythm and ring to it.” Bill Wyman wrote some of this song, but it was still credited only to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, which Wyman was never happy about.

A promotional film, which was an early music video, was shot with The Stones performing this wearing body paint and outrageous costumes. The paint and costumes would become a trend in the ’70s with bands like Kiss.

Released on 24 May 1968 in the UK by Decca Records and on 1 June in the US by London Records, “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” (backed with “Child of the Moon”) was the band’s first UK release in five and a half months – this marked the group’s longest gap between releases in the country up to that point.

A major commercial success, it reached the top of the UK Singles Chart and peaked at number three in the United States. It topped the US Cashbox chart for one week and the WLS 890 Hit Parade for four weeks. Some early London Records US pressings and Decca single in the UK of the single had a technical flaw in them: at about 2:10 about halfway through the song’s instrumental bridge, the speed of the master tape slows down for a moment, before coming back to speed. The first Rolling Stones album on which the song appeared was their 1969 compilation album, Through the Past, Darkly (Big Hits Vol. 2), one year after the single was released.

Jumpin' Jack Flash
