“You’re So Vain” – Single by Carly Simon from the album No Secrets
Released on November 8, 1972.
In early 1973, “You’re So Vain” reached No. 1 in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. In 1994, it was ranked 72nd in the Billboard 50th anniversary all-time chart.
The person Simon is singing about in this song remains a mystery, as she has never made it clear who she wrote it about; rumors include Warren Beatty, Kris Kristofferson, Cat Stevens, and Mick Jagger, all of whom she had affairs with.
Simon started recording this with Harry Nilsson singing backup, but Mick Jagger ended up singing on it instead (listen for him on the “don’t you” parts), although he was not credited on the album.
In 1972, Simon told an interviewer that the song was about “men”, not a specific man. In a 1993 book, Angie Bowie said she was the wife of a “close friend” mentioned in “You’re So Vain”, and that Jagger had been “obsessed” with her.
The original title of this song, typed on the acetate demo, was “Ballad of a Vain Man.”
