Randy Bruce Traywick s-a născut la 4 mai 1959 în orașul Marshville, din Carolina de Nord.

În 1982, Randy s-a mutat în Nashville, unde toate casele de discuri l-au refuzat, și criticat pentru că muzică lui sună prea “country”.  A înregistrat un album independent, “Live at Nashville Palace“, după care a reușit să obțînă un contract cu Warner Bros. Records.

Primul lui single On The other Hand, lansat în 1985, a ajuns doar pe poziția 67. Warner Bros. au relansat sinhle-ul în 1986 când a ajuns pe locul 1, fiind primul lui #1.

Al doilea album, Always and Forever, a fost lansat în Aprilie 1987, de pe care au fost 4 single-uri, toat au ajuns pe primul loc. “Forever and Ever, Amen” (compus împreună cu Overstreet), “I Won’t Need You Anymore (Always and Forever)”, “Too Gone Too Long”, și “I Told You So”, ultimul o compoziție propie.
